A Champion and a Gentleman! – The Official Review of the 1996 FIA Formula 1 World Championship Season

After spending the previous two season’s as F1’s ‘nearly man’, the story of Damon Hill’s eventual triumph was one of him overcoming adversity en route to becoming the first ever second-generation World Champion.
Certainly, the season contained plenty of highlights. There was Jacques Villeneuve’s sensational debut in Australia, where he looked set to win until a late oil leak intervened. There was Hill’s excellent win in the wet at Interlagos, while the crazy wet Monaco Grand Prix saw just three cars make the chequered flag.
It’s The Flying Finn’s 43rd birthday!
Two-time World Champion Mika Häkkinen is celebrating his 43rd birthday today!
Making his F1 debut in 1991, Häkkinen qualified his one-year-old Lotus an impressive 13th on the grid at Phoenix, surviving a huge spin during the race when his steering wheel came off in his hands! This incident aside, it had many of the hallmarks of a man who would claim back-to-back crowns within the next ten years…
Happy 48th birthday, Érik Comas!
Former Grand Prix driver Érik Comas is celebrating his 48th birthday today!
Érik was part of the glut of French racing stars who rose through the ranks in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He began racing karts at the relatively late age of 19, and almost immediately switched to car racing, buying an old Renault 5 from none other than Jean Alesi.
An exciting birthday today!
Two years ago, Richard’s F1 was born when we published our very first article online!

Just a day after the announcement that the outlandish Lady Gaga would be performing at the ‘F1 Rocks’ concert event for the inaugural Indian Grand Prix, Abu Dhabi organisers have confirmed two high-profile stars will perform at their ‘F1 Rocks’ post-race event.
Headlining the Sunday concert will be former Beatles singer Sir Paul McCartney, while multi-platinum artist Britney Spears will also be singing lip-syncing on stage.

Book Review: ‘The Piranha Club’
The Piranha Club: Power and Influence in Formula One, by Timothy Collings
Paperback, © 2004 Virgin Books, ISBN 9780753509654
Rewind the clock twenty years, and F1 newcomer Eddie Jordan would find himself snookered by the Flavio Briatore-led Benetton team, wresting the coveted contract of Michael Schumacher from his grasp after the German’s impressive debut at the Belgian Grand Prix.
Smarting from the experience, Jordan recalls McLaren boss Ron Dennis cold words of comfort: “Welcome to the Piranha Club.”
This attention-grabbing term is the basis for Timothy Collings’ book of the same name, which is a detailed investigation of the people who wield the power in Formula 1.
Lady Gaga confirmed for Indian GP
Circuit bosses might be facing major concerns about the construction of the venue, but at least fans attending the inaugural Indian Grand Prix will be more than entertained after the race, with news that songstress Lady Gaga will perform in the post-race concert.
RichardsF1.com Tipping Competition Leaderboard

While not the most exciting Grand Prix of the 2011 season (although, to be fair, we have been spoiled for choice with on-track action!), the Singapore Grand Prix still gave us plenty of action through the field.
And while Sebastian Vettel has the Drivers’ Championship all sewn up – he needs just a single point to claim back-to-back titles – the same cannot be said for the Richard’s F1 Tipping Competition leaderboard…
Happy 31st birthday, Patrick Friesacher!
Former Grand Prix driver Patrick Friesacher is turning 31 today!
The Austrian contested a half-season with the Minardi team in 2005, before he vacated his seat when his backing ran dry.
If you’re out and about in Sydney…
…then head to the revamped Westfield Pitt Street shopping complex and have a look at the F1 display set up by watchmaker TAG Heuer.
Featuring some of the past and present greats from motorsport, it’s certainly a nice sight!
