Moss recovering after serious fall
Sir Stirling Moss is recovering in hospital after a freak accident at his London home over the weekend.
The 80-year-old was injured courtesy of a malfunctioning elevator and is expected to take up to 6 weeks to fully recover. Moss fell three floors down the elevator shaft at his Mayfair home when the elevators doors opened before the elevator carriage had actually arrived.
An official press release states: “The accident occurred as a consequence of falling down three floors in the lift shaft at his home. The door to the lift, that should have remained locked if the lift was not on the floor that it was called from, opened in error. He stepped into the narrow open shaft in the expectation that the lift would be present for him to walk into as it should have been.”
Despite the serious fall, the man many regard as being the greatest F1 driver never to win a world championship has mercifully suffered no internal injuries. However, he has broken both ankles, four bones in one foot and chipped four vertebrae in addition to severe bruising.
He was very lucky it wasn’t worse!
Sir Stirling was admitted to the Royal London Hospital before being transferred to the Princess Grace Hospital under the care of former long-standing F1 doctor, Professor Sid Watkins. He has since had plates and pins surgically inserted into both ankles to mend the breakages, and is said to be in an improving condition.
Our best wishes to Sir Stirling for a speedy and trouble-free recovery!
